So we get a lot of questions about car seats, which one to use, and which one do I use next and when? So in this video we are going to show you a progression of car seats and when to switch from one to the other.

Now the progression that I recommend to all parents is to start with an Infant Car Seat, then move into a Convertible, and then A Combination Highback and 5 Point Harness and then to finish off with a Combination High-Back, No-Back Booster.

If you still have questions please send those to us and you can do that by commenting below or send us an email at hello@babycubby.com. Please don’t hesitate, this is the reason we do these videos is to help you get the information that you need.

Now typically the first car seat that you’re going to use with your child is going to be an Infant Car Seat. Now the biggest misconception is that you have to start with an Infant Car Seat. You actually don’t. Most if not all Convertible Car Seats you can use to bring your child home from the hospital. However you’re losing out on the convenience of an infant seat. Now an Infant Car Seat is designed with a base and so the base is what you’re going to install in your car so that you can easily click in and out your infant seat and that’s just in case your baby falls asleep in the car, then you can just click them out and carry them with you and it’s easy to install every time. Now this is also convenient because you can take your infant seat and click it into a stroller creating a travel system.

Now an Infant Car Seat you’ll use from birth up until the weight or height limit of the seat. Average is about 30 lbs and 32 inches. Once they reach that limit you do have to go into a Convertible Car Seat. Now this is a rear facing only seat. DO NOT install an infant seat forward facing, it is not going to protect your child. Also this handle there is a lot of confusion on whether you should keep it up or put it down when you install and the reason for the confusion is it’s different for every manufacturer so you do need to check with your manual to see if they recommend it being up or down or even if it matters.

Once your child reaches a year or you’re not using the convenience features of an infant car seat then you’ll move into a convertible car seat. Now the reason it’s called convertible is because it does just that. It converts from rear facing to forward facing. Now when using it rear facing that’s when you’re going to use it with your little tiny baby, make sure you’re using the appropriate inserts and to take those out when it’s appropriate. Just read your manual to find out when that is.

One of the biggest questions is when do I switch from rear facing to forward facing? This is probably the biggest safety tip that we can give you or the safety caution that we can give you. The minimum standard is 2 years AND 30 lbs. So they need to be 2 years old and weigh 30 lbs in order to turn them forward facing. Now best practice is even longer. You want to reach the limits of the car seat. So that’s the weight limit OR the height limit. Once they reach either of those then you do have to turn them forward facing. Now average convertible car seat weight limit is about 65 lbs. I would say that most people will keep their children in a convertible car seat until they’re about 5. However you can go all the way up to those limits and the average 9 year old is 65 lbs. So you can use this for quite a while and you do want to keep your child as safe as possible so try to reach those limits of the car seat.

Skyy Randolph says:

Is like to know which seat is safest for a rear facing convertible is it the middle or side sears

LiveLaugh MakeLove says:

A child thats 65lbs or 5 yrs old would be way to big for that rear to front facing seat. Most booster seats accommodate 40lbs and up.

Could you do a video on car seats that swivel?

swooza yt says:

im 10 and im 65 pounds /:

is that normal

Rafiq I says:

I can’t thank you enough for such an informative video. It puts me at ease about what kind of car seat I need to buy for my baby next. The way you put information about all the car seats (height range, weight range and the age range) are very helpful. What brand or brands do you recommend for a convertible seat?

Sailing queen says:

Thank you so much for these videos. One of my boys is in the clek Fllo. We really like the streamlined look, and that I can easily fit 3-across. What is a good high back booster and 5-point harness for him to move into (the Britax is pretty ugly)

Gayun Kim says:

Could you compare doona vs regular carseats?

LiveLaugh MakeLove says:

When my children turns roughly 5-6yrs old, they use a bottom booster till they’re about 8, or their knee bends across the seat

Kameryn Dawson says:

When do you switch from the harness to the seatbelt?

Cassandra says:

I don’t like how this makes parents think they need the most expensive seats to keep their children safe. Honestly surprised when you said you were a CPST at the end. As some of the things you said just aren’t true. Having an insert in the car seat isn’t a requirement. Some seats don’t come with inserts. You can’t always just buy them separate, if the manufacturer doesn’t make them for the particular seat you have, and you can’t use after market inserts. In that case tightly rolled receiving blankets can be used along the sides of baby. And moving from infant to convertible at one isn’t the magic number. As long as babe is within the weight and height limit it’s perfectly safe to continue riding in an infant seat. If a child is a bare minimum of 5 and can sit still (even though many aren’t mature enough) but if they can, there is no evidence that a properly fitting booster seat is safer than a harness.~former CPST that didn’t renew two years ago, but still keeping up with current recommendations.

Blommekind * says:

Could you maybe do a video on how to install a convertible carseat for newborns?

Hannah Schaffer says:

Wouldn’t even use a high back/no back at all. The Britax car seat that is the high back with the five point accommodates children until they don’t need a car seat. And riding five point is proven to be safer.
