You might already know that your child has to stay in a car seat until they are four years old. The real kicker: they also need a booster until they are 4’ 9”. That’s the height for 11-year-old boys in about the 50th percentile.

Enter the Graco 4Ever. First it’s an infant car seat in the rear-facing direction when your child is as small as 4 lbs. (Many families choose to start with an infant-specific car seat and graduate to the convertible around a year.)

Then when your baby turns two, you can turn it around to use it as a forward-facing car seat from 20 – 65 lbs. When your child gets ready to start school, it converts into a highback booster and then to a backless booster that you use with the car’s seat belt.

The 4Ever is considerably more expensive than Graco’s other convertible car seats. And for all this adaptability, it takes up a lot of space. If you have a small sedan, this might only fit in the middle of the back, and it can prevent some front seats from sliding all the way back. Also the booster portion itself is pretty wide and bulky which you’ll want to keep in mind if you need to put three car seats across your back seat. (If you need to optimize for space, opt for a smaller convertible car seat like the Maxi Cosi and then graduate your child to a narrow booster seat as they grow.)

Installation in every position is pretty straight forward with the seat’s LATCH anchors, and it has a bubble indicator to show if it’s installed in the correct level position. (It is pretty heavy to move between cars or to take out for traveling.) Once your child is more than 42 lbs (around five years), you’ll need to attach the car seat using seat belts, not LATCH. The 4Ever does not have a seat belt lockoff, so you will need to look at your car’s manual to figure out how your car’s lockoff works to make sure it’s installed safely with the seat belt.

The no-rethread adjustable harness is incredibly simple to use and has ten positions to grow with baby. The car seat cover is easy to remove and wash when it gets dirty, and the seat comes with two cup holders. We’re not sure why your baby needs two drinks, but you could use one for snacks or toys.

Rebekah McDermott says:

I think state law is what determines how long you child needs to be in a car seat for. In Michigan, it’s 8 years old OR 4’9; it’s whichever comes first.
